It was beyond retarded, but after the comment by Carl and Sri that I should populate my smbpasswd file, smbd handled by connections with no problems. Everything worked from both localhost and a remote client. How lame. I was under the impression that smbd defaulted to /etc/passwd and the default unix users. Lame lame lame.
With that figured out, it became relatively simple to mount my work home directory at home via tunneling. Finally. This host can be used as a fileserver.

Having no real plans for the long weekend, I compiled a little TODO list. Nothing too ambitious, but I’ve already finished the first item.
1. Finally set up the Java plug-in for Firefox - done. This was not actually too tough, but I just wasn’t reading the fine print that the plug-in for Linux - AMD64 didn’t come with the libjavaplugin-oji.so shared object. I just had to get the plain 32-bit version and link it in.
2. Use openoffice to model my expected new expenses - done. The only thing I haven’t looked into yet is getting a good number for actual property tax rates in Santa Clara County. I also guesstimated utility charges because I figured there’s no way I’d ever get all the actual little additional taxes right on those.
3. Get samba to work - done.
4. Clean my room - make more space - throw old stuff away.
5. Do the image swap - done. Will have before & after screenshots shortly. The ebay ice chest seller’s link can be found here Rubbermaid Ice Chest. A quick update in the myspace user has swapped the image to my backup location for the file: http://www.myrandomshih.com/images/backgrounds/blueice.jpg.old. That’s been fixed as well. And added an index.html to avoid index access to the directory. I guess I always have .htaccess if I actually need to restrict access further.
