I went back to Berkeley today to have coffee w/ a friend and some things have definitely changed… from what I could get with my camera phone…

warning - big nerd post ahead.
as mentioned in an earlier post, i’ve been brutally assaulted by work. however, things look like they may be calming down soon, and now, it will just be a matter of closing everything out.
in the meantime, i have found joys in small things… like making ringtones for my phone! on my old phone, if I wanted some “real” (aka, better than midi) ringtones on my phone, it used a qualcomm proprietary audio format called “purevoice” or qcp. It wasn’t all that great, but it compressed well and it was sufficient for getting my 24 CTU ringtone working.
but with my new a900, oh baby, full mp4/aac support. i wouldn’t have thought it, but the aac converter compresses audio to a simliar size as qcp, but man, it sounds soooo much better. and since i’ve been running linux, i’ve been using a combination of tools to convert my mp3s to m4a (mp4 audio).
audacity - is what i use to truncate my mp3s and convert to .wav
sox - downsample to 8000Hz, 16-bit encoding and mono
faac - convert .wav -> .aac
