and more geeky star wars stuff

Published by dave under General

someone put up a blog where he writes as darth vader.

and there’s a “music video” now for episode 3. it’s at http://pdl.stream.aol.com/aol/us/moviefone/movies/2004/lucasfilm/hyperspace/epiii_music_video_480_dl.mov. it’s a decent sized clip, 3 min 36 sec. probably 66% of the stuff is from existing trailers, but the new stuff is all pretty cool (i.e. combat related). like there’s one clip where you see anakin and obi-wan in the midst of their fight, and at the same time, you see them reach out and try to force push/grip each other.

and this guy’s got lots and lots of pictures: http://www.aptirrelevance.com/sw-archive/searchresults.php?browse=rots. including the end of the obi-wan anakin duel, and anakin being worked on by the medical droids.

starcon and more 24 cast on other series

Published by dave under General, geek

Gregory Itzin, the actor who plays (vice) president logan in 24 this season, was also an admiral on enterprise in “into the mirror, darkly part 2.” still sort of sad that enterprise is going away.

good news… one of the best games of all time, starcon 2, now has been brought back in open source form: http://sc2.sourceforge.net/. thanks to kelly for pointing that one out. if you are going to try this out, be sure to specify the -c biadv option for advanced biadaptive scaling. otherwise the images look really blocky.

good hockey season

Published by dave under General, hockey

This may be our best season so far. Tonight we clinched the first seed in the playoffs by beating our closest rival 5-3. This puts us at 7-1 for the season with team stats of 33 GF and 19 GA in 8 games. We have this really unbelievably productive line now that’s formed by the oldest guy on the team and the youngest guy on the team. Tonight, the youngest guy scored 4 goals. I have to say, while I don’t want to get ahead of myself, I’m pretty excited for our chances of taking it all the way this season.

yes, i am a star wars nerd

Published by dave under General, geek

i was looking at the new star wars tv spots and i happened upon the expanded universe story for the emperor.

it’s interesting because it explains how he survives for so long and why he can look so gnarled and nasty. and apparently, he didn’t die until sometime after the “return of the jedi.”

24 bad guy reunion

Published by dave under General

i’ve been watching this nbc mini-series “revelations,” which is supposed to be a dramatization of what the end of the world will look like according to the book of revelation in the bible.

it’s sort of interesting… and i’m not a biblical scholar or a theologian, but supposedly it takes into account some of the usual interpretations of the prophesies regarding the end of the world.

what i just wanted to point out however, is that the two “bad guys” (we don’t really know who’s bad right now) were both previous bad guys from 24. one is the actor who played ira gaines from season one, and the other is the one who played the old oil tycoon, the last bad guy from season two.

other reasons for declining CD sales besides P2P

Published by dave under General

a canadian lawyer recently published an article detailing how the CRIA (the canadian equivalent of RIAA) greatly exaggerrated losses incurred by canadian recording artists due to P2P file sharing.

Examples of some reasons he gives are:
1. CD sales are losing out to DVDs, which are substitute goods
2. People are listening to less music and watching more movies, tv, talking more on their cellphones and spending more time on the internet.
3. Large retail stores (Target, Walmart, Best Buy) now account for 50% of retail CD sales, hurting traditional catalog sales (i.e. BMG, Columbia House I assume) which tended to help sales of older CDs
4. Aggressive pricing by retail chains such as Walmart.

Apparently Canadian recording artists also benefit from something called the “copying levy,” which is basically a program put in place by the Canadian government which allows Canadians to freely copy and distribute music, and in turn, a levy (tax) is placed on recordable media sales, and part of that tax is distributed to Canadian recording artists.

Artists should stop whining about p2p hurting their CD sales while they continue to try to sell their CDs for > $9.99.

Two clips: One of crazy skill, one that’s just funny.
crazy skill clip (even better than the infamous “michigan” although this wasn’t done during an actual game)
funny clip. coaching - pulp fiction style - with the preacherman and all.

to be clear, we use > 10% of our brains

Published by dave under General

from snopes.com refuting the claim that we only use 10% of our brain. and this isn’t just refuting that we only use 10% of our brain at any given time, or that only 10% of our brain is used consciously, apparently, the 10% claim is just flat out wrong and is a myth that has managed to persist through time.
