my random pictures

After a 5 hour delay, our flight got us to Hawaii just before dinner. We had dinner at Keoni's, a Thai resturant where we had our first dinner last year as well.

It's called "evil jungle prince chicken." seriously.

My first of three plate lunches during the week at Rainbow's Drive-In. A local favorite. Yum.

A picture of a random chair in front of Neiman Marcus at Ala Moana Shopping Ctr. WB setting caused the picture to come out bluish, which was actually sort of nice. The green in the tree creates a strong contrast

Yum. First Rainbow's plate lunch of the trip. The standard mix plate of chicken, bbq beef, and mahi mahi.

L'Epicier, a tea store at Ala Moana

The front entrance to the big Hilo Hattie on Oahu (this wasn't at Ala Moana... but there is a Hilo Hattie there as well)

One of Christina's co-workers wanted us to bring back some Li Hing candy for her. After having no luck finding it anywhere else, we basically bought all they had at the Super K-Mart we stopped at.

The setting sun reflected off a rental board at Waikiki Beach

Brew Moon restaurant at the Ward Center

A shot of Flat Island and a beachgoer between trees at Kailua Beach

This was just to give a good idea of what the ridged mountains look like all over Oahu

On our way back down Hwy 83. It's hard to see, but there's a lighthouse around the middle of the downward slope of that hunk of rock.

Our dinner at Brew Moon (yes, the pictures are out of order sometimes)

Malasadas = Portuguese donuts. A must try if you ever have a chance.

Leonard's is a great bakery on Kapahulu Dr that sells Malasadas. It was recommended to us by a local and by one of my co-workers

It's hard to read, but the sign on the building says "Man who sits on tack is better off." It's mostly funny because Christina didn't get it at first.

Driving along H-3 E, approaching the tunnel that takes you through to the windward side of the island

Along the drive down Tantalus Drive

Aoki's Shave Ice in Hale'iwa, a town on the north shore

Just down the street (about 100 ft) from Aoki's is Matsumoto's. Both popular places to get shave ice

Random church across the street from Aoki's and Matsumoto's

I'm afraid it is. McDonald's Taro Pie.

The hills behind a beautiful sprawling, nameless beach on the north shore, right where Route 930 W (unexpectedly) turns into an undrivable dirt road

This beach was really nice. The pictures don't do it justice

We were sort of in a hurry (before we hit the dead end), but when we saw this beach, we had to get out and look at it.

It was really clean and empty, only downside is that the shore drops off relatively quickly (compared to other beaches where you can walk out a bit). But otherwise, it really felt like you were just alone out there with the blue ocean

If you look hard in the background, there's smoke rising over the field dead ahead. There was some big fire during our drive back from the north shore.

Back to Waikiki, a Nike Store and Banana Republic

... and Tiffany's across the street

Christina and I at Halekulani, a really nice hotel on the island. Great for drinks, soothing live Hawaiian music, and sunsets.

A shot into Aloha (Arizona Memorial) Stadium, around which the Aloha Flea Market merchants pitch their shops

Really cheap t-shirts

A sort of out of place stand of stuffed animals

This just seemed cool to me for some reason

Ah... Rainbow's... so good. A semi-clear shot of the menu

Second stop at Rainbow's was all bbq beef

More Kailua Beach surroundings (no, I didn't go back, just the out of ordered-ness of the pictures)

You could actually rent kayaks and paddle out to the island. There were supposed to be four islands off the shore of Kailua beach that you could paddle out to and explore

An in-the-water shot of Flat Island off the shore of Kailua Beach

The beautiful, nameless northwest beach, bear in mind that the panoramic shots distort the image by "curling it in." This shore was essentially straight

Another view from Tantalus, Waikiki again, but also part of the valley between the two main mountain ranges that run up and down Oahu
